HAILEY

"Where have you been? I've been looking everywhere for you." Luke slammed the front door behind him and rushed over to me.

"Oh, relax. I've been right here." I adjusted my position on the couch, trying to find that sweet spot of comfort.

"Absolutely you have not. I've been through this house four times looking for you. Your phone is on the kitchen counter."

"Really?" I checked the clock over the TV. It had been like two hours since I sat down. "That's weird," I muttered, a little freaked out.

"Couldn't even smell you in the house. It was like you vanished." Luke rubbed his forehead.

I chuckled and winked at my brother. He was really freaking out about something. "Super creepy, dude. Why are you smelling me?"

Yeah, he wasn't amused at my joke. "Stop it, you know what I mean."

I chuckled, but my heart wasn't in it. The whole situation was absurd. I fiddled with a necklace with an obnoxiously large diamond that wasn't really my style. When had I put this on? It was mine, a gift from Dom when Jax and I had completed our mating ceremony. I kept it in a safe with other jewelry Jax had accumulated over the years. I'd only worn it once or twice, and then not for long. When had I put it on?

"Hailey, are you going to listen to me?" Luke dropped to his knees in front of me. "Seriously."

I let the necklace and missing time go for a moment. I'd have to figure it out, because I'd been known to zone out, but not to the point that I couldn't remember anything that went on. "Okay, okay. What's the emergency?"

"Ransom, he's… well, I don't think he's Ransom. I think someone's pretending to be him." If a vampire could be pale, Luke was.

"Wait, what? How did you come to that conclusion?" I took my brother's hand and pulled him up, so he sat beside me on the couch.

"His behavior lately—disappearing at all hours, being distant and secretive. He's been putting off the mating, which is so unlike him." He jumped up to pace again.

Those things were worrisome, but they didn't necessarily equate Ransom being an imposter. "That does sound odd. Maybe he's just going through something."

"Or maybe someone's replaced him with a doppelgänger who's planning on infiltrating our ranks and destroying us from within," Luke said dramatically, clearly having spent too much time watching conspiracy theories on YouTube.

"Ransom's been disappearing at all hours, even during daylight. Now tell me that's not suspicious."

"Maybe he's just getting some vitamin D," I said, although Luke had a point. Vampires and daylight didn't mix well. Even ones as old as Ransom.

"Be serious. He's also been incredibly distant with both Goldie and me. Something's off."

That all still didn't mean he wasn't Ransom. "People can be moody. It doesn't mean they've been body-snatched or whatever."

"True, but there's more. He's been secretive, standoffish... He's been hardcore avoiding Goldie." Luke arched an eyebrow.

Okay, that was weird. "Wait, what? I thought he was head over heels for Goldie.
